Pirangut lies to the west of Pune along the Paud Road corridor, on the route connecting Pune city with Paud, Mulshi and the Tamhini Ghat. The surrounding terrain forms part of the western reaches of the Deccan Plateau, sloping towards the Western Ghats. The Mose river basin and catchments feeding the Mulshi reservoir lie in the wider region. Nearby settlements include Bhugaon, Bhukum, Paud and Lavale.
Pirangut is best known for the Pirangut Industrial Area, an estate developed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The estate hosts a mix of small, medium and large manufacturing units engaged in engineering, automotive components, fabrication, packaging and allied industries. The presence of MIDC has been a major driver of employment and migration into the area, supplementing the older agricultural economy based on rice, vegetables and dairy.
Pirangut is connected to central Pune by the Paud Road, which links Kothrud and Bhugaon to Paud and onward to the Mulshi region. State transport buses operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation and Pune metropolitan bus services connect the town to Pune city. The nearest major railway station and airport are in Pune.
The Pirangut belt and the adjoining Lavale–Bhugaon corridor have seen the establishment of several educational institutions and campuses serving the western Pune suburbs, alongside local Marathi-medium and English-medium schools that cater to the town and surrounding villages.
For local administration, Pirangut falls under the gram panchayat system within Mulshi taluka, with revenue and development functions handled at the taluka and Pune zilla parishad levels. Industrial zones in and around the town are administered by MIDC for infrastructure within their estates.
Pirangut's significance lies in its role as a transitional zone between the urbanised western suburbs of Pune and the rural, hilly Mulshi region. The MIDC estate has made it one of the notable industrial nodes on the western side of Pune, while expanding residential development reflects the broader outward growth of the Pune Metropolitan Region.
