The company was originally established as Ruchi Soya Industries Limited, one of India's largest processors of oilseeds and producers of edible oils. Ruchi Soya was historically known for brands such as Mahakosh, Sunrich, Ruchi Gold and Nutrela, the last of which became a widely recognised soya-based food brand in India.
Ruchi Soya operated a network of crushing, refining and packaging plants across India and was a significant player in the soyabean processing industry. The company faced severe financial distress and was admitted to insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.
Following a corporate insolvency resolution process before the National Company Law Tribunal, Patanjali Ayurved emerged as the successful resolution applicant and completed the acquisition of Ruchi Soya in 2019. After the takeover, the company was relaunched on the public markets through a follow-on public offer.
In 2022, the company was renamed Patanjali Foods Limited to reflect its integration into the wider Patanjali brand portfolio. As part of the restructuring, the food and FMCG business of Patanjali Ayurved was progressively transferred to Patanjali Foods, broadening the company's product range beyond edible oils into biscuits, breakfast cereals, ghee, honey, spices and other packaged foods.
Patanjali Foods manufactures and markets a wide range of products, including:
The company also has interests in palm plantation development under government-backed oil palm initiatives.
Patanjali Foods is among the largest edible oil companies in India by capacity and volume. Its acquisition by Patanjali Ayurved is frequently cited as a notable example of a successful corporate resolution under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, and it positioned the Patanjali group as a major listed FMCG entity in India.
