Mhambrey came through the strong Mumbai cricket system, which has historically been one of the most competitive domestic circuits in Indian cricket. He developed as a seam bowler capable of moving the ball off the pitch, and was part of Mumbai sides that contested the Ranji Trophy through the 1990s and into the early 2000s.
Mhambrey played first-class cricket for Mumbai, contributing to the team's pace attack across multiple Ranji Trophy seasons. His domestic performances earned him selection to the India A side and ultimately to the senior national team.
He earned a Test cap for India during the 1996 tour of England, when India played a three-match Test series. His international career was brief, and he did not become a regular member of the Indian Test or limited-overs sides thereafter, returning to focus on domestic cricket with Mumbai.
After retiring as a player, Mhambrey moved into coaching and bowling-development roles within Indian cricket. He has been associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's coaching set-up, working with India A and the India Under-19 team, where he was involved with squads at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He has also served as a bowling coach with Indian Premier League franchises.
He was appointed bowling coach of the senior India men's team, working alongside the head coach in supporting India's pace attack across formats during international tours and ICC events.
While Mhambrey's playing career at the international level was short, he is regarded within Indian cricket primarily for his contributions as a coach and mentor to fast bowlers. His career arc — from a Mumbai domestic seamer to a national-team bowling coach — is reflective of the increasing role former first-class cricketers play in shaping India's modern coaching structure.
