Panjiri is a sweet dish from India, traditionally associated with religious and festive occasions. It is especially prepared for Krishna Janmashtami, the festival celebrating the birth of the deity Krishna, and is offered as prasada before being shared among devotees.
The preparation is believed to have evolved from an Ayurvedic formulation known as Panchajīraka. Over time, this earlier preparation gave rise to the sweet panjiri that is now familiar in Indian culinary and devotional traditions.
As a Janmashtami offering, panjiri features prominently in temple kitchens and home celebrations linked with the worship of Krishna, where sweets and other foods are presented to the deity as part of ritual observance.
