Paldi lies on the west bank of the Sabarmati, immediately south of the Ellis Bridge area and adjoining localities such as Vasna, Ambawadi, and Sarkhej Road on different sides. It is connected to the eastern (old) city across the river by the Sardar Bridge and Sardar Patel Bridge, and to the central business district through Ashram Road.
The development of Paldi as a residential suburb gathered pace in the mid-twentieth century, as Ahmedabad expanded westward beyond the walled city. The neighbourhood became known for its cooperative housing societies, low-rise apartment blocks, and bungalows, many associated with families connected to the city's textile and trading communities. The area also became home to several cultural and educational institutions that contributed to its identity as a hub of Gujarati arts and learning.
Paldi houses a number of well-known cultural and academic landmarks of Ahmedabad, including:
The neighbourhood is also known for its association with Gujarati literary and theatre circles, as well as numerous bookshops and publishing houses.
Paldi falls under the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and is part of the West Zone of the city's municipal administration. Civic services, road maintenance, water supply, and solid waste management in the area are administered by the AMC.
Paldi is served by Ahmedabad's city bus network operated by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), as well as the Bus Rapid Transit System (Janmarg) along nearby corridors. The area is connected by major arterial roads including Ashram Road and the riverfront roads developed as part of the Sabarmati Riverfront project. Auto-rickshaws and app-based taxi services are widely used for local travel.
Paldi is considered one of the cultural cores of western Ahmedabad, combining residential character with institutions of art, education, and public life. Its proximity to the Sabarmati Riverfront, the Ellis Bridge commercial belt, and the city's older heritage zones gives it a central location within the post-independence growth of Ahmedabad.
