Rout made her mark on the junior circuit by winning national age-category championships and representing India at the World Youth Chess Championship and the Asian Youth Chess Championship in various age groups. Her strong showings in junior events helped establish her as one of the leading female players of her generation in India.
Rout has won the National Women's Premier Chess Championship on multiple occasions, an event organised by the All India Chess Federation that determines the country's top-ranked woman player. Her successive titles in the national championship placed her among the most consistent women players in India during the 2010s.
She has represented India at the Chess Olympiad as part of the women's team, and has played in the Women's World Chess Championship knockout cycles and Women's Grand Prix events organised by FIDE. She has also taken part in Asian Women's Chess Championships and Commonwealth Chess Championships, as well as numerous open international tournaments in Europe and Asia.
Rout earned the FIDE Woman Grandmaster title after fulfilling the rating and norm requirements set by FIDE. She also holds the International Master (IM) title, which is awarded in the open (non-gender-restricted) FIDE title system and is considered above the WGM benchmark in rating terms.
As one of the leading women chess players from Odisha, Rout has been an important figure in the growth of competitive chess in eastern India. Her sustained performances in the National Women's Championship and on the Indian Olympiad team contributed to the increasing visibility of Indian women in international chess during a period when players such as Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli and Tania Sachdev were establishing India as a leading women's chess nation.
