Overview

Nutan (4 June 1936 – 21 February 1991) was an Indian actress whose career in Hindi cinema spanned more than four decades, from the early 1950s until her death in 1991. Widely regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation, she was known for portraying complex, dignified women in films that combined commercial appeal with artistic depth. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress five times, a record she held until it was equalled by her niece Kajol.

Background and Early Life

Nutan was born into a family deeply involved in Indian cinema. Her mother, Shobhna Samarth, was a leading actress of the 1940s, and her father, Kumarsen Samarth, was a director. She was educated partly in Switzerland at La Chatelaine finishing school. Her sister Tanuja also became a noted actress, and the family's cinematic legacy continued through the next generation with Kajol, Tanishaa, and Mohnish Bahl.

Career

Debut and Early Films

Nutan made her screen debut as a child with Hamari Beti (1950), produced by her mother. She came into her own with Seema (1955), directed by Amiya Chakravarty, which earned her the first of her Filmfare Best Actress awards.

Peak Years

Through the late 1950s and 1960s, Nutan delivered a series of acclaimed performances. Notable films include:

Personal Life

Nutan married Rajnish Bahl, an officer of the Indian Navy, in 1959. The couple had one son, Mohnish Bahl, who later became an actor in Hindi films and television. Nutan continued to act consistently after marriage, balancing her career with family life.

Death

Nutan was diagnosed with cancer in the late 1980s. She died on 21 February 1991 in Bombay at the age of 54. At the time of her death, several films featuring her were in various stages of production and were released posthumously.

Significance

Nutan is remembered for bringing emotional realism and understatement to Hindi cinema during an era dominated by stylised performances. Her portrayals in Sujata and Bandini, in particular, are studied as benchmarks of restrained acting.
