Before entering films, he worked briefly in the information technology sector with Infosys at Bengaluru.
Nivin Pauly made his acting debut in 2010 with Malarvaadi Arts Club, the directorial debut of Vineeth Sreenivasan, produced under the banner of actor Dileep. The film featured a group of newcomers and became a moderate success, introducing Nivin to Malayalam audiences.
His breakthrough came with Thattathin Marayathu (2012), again directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, in which he played a young man in love with a Muslim girl. The romantic film was a major commercial success and established him as a youth-oriented lead actor. He followed it with Neram (2013), a bilingual Malayalam-Tamil film directed by Alphonse Puthren.
The 2014 ensemble film Bangalore Days, directed by Anjali Menon, became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the period and significantly raised his profile. In 2015, he starred in Alphonse Puthren's Premam, which became a cultural phenomenon in Kerala and a landmark commercial success in Malayalam cinema. The film's three-part narrative tracing a young man's love stories made his portrayal of George David widely popular across South India.
His later notable films include Action Hero Biju (2016), Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016), Sakhavu (2017), Hey Jude (2018), Love Action Drama (2019), Moothon (2019), and Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham (2021). He made his Tamil-language lead debut with Richie (2017), a remake of the Kannada film Ulidavaru Kandanthe.
Nivin Pauly launched his own production house, Pauly Jr. Pictures, through which he produced Mili (2015), directed by Rajesh Pillai, in which he also acted alongside Amala Paul.
Nivin Pauly has received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in 1983 (2014), a film directed by Abrid Shine. He has also received Filmfare Awards South and other regional honours for his work in Malayalam cinema.
Nivin Pauly married Rinna Joy in 2010. The couple has two children. He resides in Aluva, Kerala.
Nivin Pauly is associated with the "new-generation" movement in Malayalam cinema, a phase from the late 2000s and early 2010s that brought fresh themes, naturalistic performances, and younger actors to the fore. Films featuring him, particularly Premam and Bangalore Days, have been credited with expanding the commercial reach of Malayalam cinema beyond Kerala, including among diaspora audiences and viewers in other South Indian states.
