Chowdhury belonged to a cohort of Indian cricketers whose careers spanned the transition from pre-independence cricket, organised largely through the Ranji Trophy from 1934 onwards, to the post-independence consolidation of domestic cricket under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Ranji Trophy and other zonal tournaments provided the primary stage for cricketers of his era.
Chowdhury participated in first-class cricket in India. Domestic cricket in the period of his activity was structured around regional teams competing in the Ranji Trophy, supplemented by representative matches involving touring sides and zonal selections.
Cricketers from Chowdhury's generation contributed to the establishment of a formal first-class system in India and helped sustain the domestic game during a period when international fixtures were comparatively infrequent. Their participation laid the groundwork for the expansion of Indian cricket in subsequent decades.
