New Barrackpore lies between Madhyamgram to the south and Barrackpore to the west, with Birati and Nimta in the neighbourhood. The terrain is part of the lower Gangetic plain, flat and low-lying, drained by minor channels of the Hooghly basin. The city is well integrated with the Kolkata suburban network and is situated near the Sealdah–Bangaon railway line, with stations such as Bira and Birati providing access to commuter trains.
The town is administered by the New Barrackpore Municipality, which manages local services including water supply, sanitation, roads, and street lighting. The municipality is divided into wards, each represented by an elected councillor. The municipal area comes under the jurisdiction of the New Barrackpore (Vidhan Sabha) constituency for state legislative elections and falls within the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary representation.
The town developed as a planned residential extension in the post-Independence period, accommodating refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and later expanding as a middle-class suburb of Kolkata. Its name derives from its proximity to the older cantonment town of Barrackpore. Like other suburban towns along Jessore Road, New Barrackpore grew rapidly with the extension of suburban rail services and bus routes connecting it to central Kolkata.
The town hosts a number of schools and colleges. New Barrackpore Colony Boys' High School and New Barrackpore Colony Girls' High School are among the established secondary institutions. Higher education is offered by colleges in the area, with several affiliated to the West Bengal State University.
Bengali is the principal language of the town, and the population is predominantly Bengali Hindu, with significant communities tracing their origins to East Bengal. Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, and Poila Boishakh are observed widely, and the town shares the broader cultural life of suburban Kolkata.
