The NSI was established to provide a common platform for clinicians, surgeons and researchers working in the neurosciences in India. In its early years the society united the relatively small community of neurologists and neurosurgeons practising in the country, encouraging the development of dedicated departments in teaching hospitals and the standardisation of training.
Over time, as the disciplines of neurology and neurosurgery expanded in scope and numbers, specialised sub-societies emerged in India. The NSI has nevertheless continued as the umbrella organisation for the broader neuroscience community, holding joint academic activities across these specialities.
Membership of the society is drawn primarily from qualified neurologists, neurosurgeons and other neuroscientists working in academic institutions, government hospitals and private practice across India. The society also admits trainees and associate members in allied disciplines such as neuroradiology, neuropathology and neuroanaesthesia.
As the apex body for neuroscientists in the country, the NSI has played a central role in shaping the growth of clinical neurosciences in India. Through its conferences, publications and educational activities, the society has contributed to building a national community of practice and to integrating Indian neuroscience research and clinical care with international developments.
