NLUJAA was established by an Act of the Assam Legislative Assembly to provide high-quality legal education in the North-East region of India and to function as a hub for judicial training. Its creation reflected the wider movement, beginning with the establishment of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, of setting up specialised, autonomous law universities in different states to reform legal education in the country.
Unlike most other NLUs, NLUJAA was conceived with a dual mandate: alongside its academic programmes for law students, it incorporates a judicial academy intended to provide induction and refresher training to judicial officers of Assam.
The university offers an integrated undergraduate degree in law along with postgraduate programmes and research degrees. Admission to the integrated law programme is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities, of which NLUJAA is a member.
The curriculum follows the standards prescribed by the Bar Council of India, combining core subjects of law with electives in areas such as constitutional law, commercial law, criminal law, international law, and human rights. The university also undertakes research in areas of regional relevance, including issues concerning the North-East, customary laws, and tribal jurisprudence.
The Judicial Academy component of NLUJAA conducts training programmes, workshops, and continuing legal education for judicial officers, public prosecutors, and members of the legal services. This makes the institution a resource centre for the judiciary in Assam, in addition to its role as a teaching university.
The university is located in Guwahati, the largest city of Assam and the principal urban and educational centre of the North-East. Its position in Kamrup Metropolitan district places it near major institutions such as the Gauhati High Court, supporting its judicial training functions.
NLUJAA is the first National Law University in the North-East of India and serves a region historically underrepresented in elite legal education. By combining academic instruction with judicial training under one institution, it occupies a particular niche within the network of Indian National Law Universities, contributing both to the legal profession and to the capacity of the state judiciary.
