National Law Universities in India trace their origin to the establishment of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore in 1987, which introduced the integrated five-year law degree as a model for legal education. Since then, several states have set up their own NLUs through dedicated state legislation, each functioning as an autonomous institution focused on legal studies, research and allied disciplines.
The National Law University, Tripura, was established to extend this model to the north-eastern region of India, providing students from Tripura and neighbouring states with access to a specialised institution for the study of law without having to travel to other parts of the country.
The university is situated in Agartala, the capital city of Tripura. Agartala lies close to the international border with Bangladesh and serves as the administrative, educational and commercial centre of the state. The placement of an NLU in Agartala adds to the city's growing profile as a hub for higher education in the north-east, alongside institutions such as Tripura University and the National Institute of Technology, Agartala.
