NIT Agartala traces its origins to the Tripura Engineering College (TEC), which was established by the Government of Tripura to provide undergraduate engineering education in the state. The institution was later upgraded into a National Institute of Technology, joining the chain of NITs that were created by converting and consolidating earlier Regional Engineering Colleges and select state engineering colleges into centrally funded technical institutions.
Following its conversion, the institute came under the purview of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which conferred on all NITs the status of Institutes of National Importance and brought them under a uniform statutory framework with their own Board of Governors, Senate, Director, and other authorities.
The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes primarily in engineering, technology, sciences, and management-related disciplines. Departments cover core engineering branches such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and communication, computer science, and chemical engineering, along with basic sciences and humanities. Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and the centralised counselling administered by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), while postgraduate admissions are based on national-level examinations such as GATE.
The institute is situated at Jirania in the West Tripura district, away from the main urban centre of Agartala. The campus houses academic departments, laboratories, a central library, hostels for male and female students, staff quarters, and sports and recreational facilities.
As the principal centrally funded technical institution in Tripura, NIT Agartala plays a significant role in higher technical education in the north-eastern region of India. It contributes to the supply of trained engineers and researchers from a region that has historically had limited access to large-scale technical institutions, and participates in national initiatives in research, innovation, and skill development through the NIT system.
