The origins of NIMHANS trace back to the establishment of the Bangalore Lunatic Asylum in the nineteenth century during the period of British administration in the Mysore region. In 1974, it was reconstituted and formally renamed the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, bringing together clinical services, academic programmes, and research under a unified structure.
