India's food processing sector has been identified by successive governments as a priority area, given the country's large agricultural base and the potential for value addition, employment generation and reduction of post-harvest losses. NIFTEM was conceived as a sector-specific institution to address the need for trained professionals, entrepreneurs and researchers in this domain. The institute was established by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries to act as a knowledge hub linking farmers, processors, regulators, academia and industry.
NIFTEM offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes oriented towards the food sector. Its academic focus areas typically include:

The institute's mandate covers a broad set of activities meant to strengthen the food processing ecosystem:
NIFTEM is significant as one of the few specialised institutions in India focused exclusively on the food processing sector. By integrating technology, management and entrepreneurship under one academic umbrella, it complements the work of agricultural universities, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutions, and central food research bodies such as the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute. Its work is also linked with national initiatives aimed at expanding the food processing industry, building cold-chain and logistics capacity, improving food safety, and promoting Indian processed foods in domestic and export markets.
