The National Defence College (NDC) is a premier strategic studies and higher defence education institution of the Government of India, located in New Delhi. It conducts the apex-level course in strategy and national security for senior officers of the Indian Armed Forces, the Civil Services, and select officers from friendly foreign countries. The college functions under the Ministry of Defence and is widely regarded as the senior-most training establishment in the Indian defence ecosystem.

By the late 1950s, the Indian government recognised the need for an institution that could train senior officers to think beyond their own service or department and develop an integrated understanding of national security, strategy, economy, science and technology, and international affairs. The National Defence College was set up to fill this role, drawing inspiration from comparable institutions abroad, such as the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom and the National War College in the United States.
The college is located on Tees January Marg in central New Delhi, in close proximity to other key defence and policy institutions. The campus houses lecture halls, a research library specialising in strategic affairs, and accommodation and administrative facilities for the course members and faculty.
The flagship programme at NDC is a year-long higher defence and strategic studies course conducted annually. It is designed for officers selected at the rank of Brigadier and equivalent in the Army, Navy and Air Force, and for senior civil servants of equivalent rank from the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service and other allied services. A significant number of seats are reserved each year for officers nominated by friendly foreign governments.

The course combines lectures by serving and retired senior officials, academics and subject specialists with directed reading, seminars, individual research papers, and extensive study tours within India and abroad. On successful completion, course members are entitled to use the post-nominal designation ndc.
The college is headed by a Commandant, traditionally a serving three-star officer drawn in rotation from the Army, Navy or Air Force. The Commandant is supported by senior directing staff representing the three services and the civil services, along with academic and research faculty. The institution maintains close working links with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, the service headquarters, and the Ministries of Defence and External Affairs.
NDC occupies a distinctive position in India's professional military education pyramid. While institutions such as the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College train officers at the entry and mid-career levels, NDC focuses on preparing them for the highest command, staff and policy appointments. Many alumni have gone on to serve as Service Chiefs, Vice Chiefs, Army, Navy and Air Force Commanders, Cabinet Secretaries, Defence Secretaries, Foreign Secretaries and Ambassadors. Foreign alumni have also risen to senior positions in their respective armed forces and governments, contributing to India's defence diplomacy.
