National Academy of Direct Taxes

The National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) is the apex training institution of the Income Tax Department of the Government of India. Located in Nagpur, Maharashtra, it functions under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, and is responsible for the induction training of officers of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) as well as the in-service training of officers and staff of the department.

Overview

NADT is the principal training establishment for the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), one of the Group A central civil services of the Government of India. The academy conducts the induction course for IRS probationers selected through the Civil Services Examination administered by the Union Public Service Commission. In addition to induction training, it organises mid-career training programmes, refresher courses, and specialised modules on direct taxation, investigation, international taxation, transfer pricing, and information technology applications used by the department.

Background

Training of income tax officers in India was institutionalised in the years following independence, with a dedicated training establishment evolving through several reorganisations. The institution was set up at Nagpur, where it has continued to operate as the central training facility of the Income Tax Department. It is supported by a network of Regional Training Institutes (RTIs) and Ministerial Staff Training Units (MSTUs) located in different parts of the country, which handle training of inspectors, ministerial staff, and lower-level officers.

Training programme

The induction course for IRS (IT) probationers spans an extended period and includes foundational training, departmental subjects, attachments with field offices of the Income Tax Department, and exposure to allied agencies. Curriculum components typically cover the Income-tax Act, 1961, allied direct tax laws, accountancy, business laws, public finance, investigation techniques, and management skills. Probationers also undertake a Bharat Darshan study tour and institutional attachments as part of the programme.

Campus

The NADT campus in Nagpur houses academic blocks, hostels for officer trainees, faculty residences, library and research facilities, sports infrastructure, and an auditorium. Nagpur's central location in India and its connectivity have contributed to its role as the host city for the academy.

Significance

As the nodal training institution for the direct tax administration of India, NADT plays a central role in shaping the professional outlook of officers who administer the country's direct tax laws and contribute substantially to the Union government's revenue. The academy also serves as a forum for policy discussion and capacity building in the field of direct taxation.
