Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research

The Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research (NIMSR) is a government medical college and teaching hospital located in Kohima, the capital of the Indian state of Nagaland. It was conceived to address the longstanding absence of a medical college in Nagaland, which until its establishment had been one of the few Indian states without a dedicated institution offering the MBBS programme. The institute is intended to combine undergraduate medical education with tertiary clinical care for the region.

State Nagaland

Background

For much of its history after statehood in 1963, Nagaland did not possess its own medical college. Students from the state pursuing the MBBS degree generally relied on seats reserved in medical colleges in other states under central and regional quotas, particularly in the North East and elsewhere in India. The proposal for a state-run medical college in Kohima was advanced by the Government of Nagaland to reduce this dependence, retain medical talent within the state, and strengthen tertiary referral services for the population of Nagaland and adjoining areas.

Establishment

NIMSR was set up by the Government of Nagaland as a state institution, with the campus and associated hospital developed in Kohima. The college is intended to function alongside the existing public health infrastructure of the state, including the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, which has historically been the principal referral hospital in the capital.

Academics

The institute's primary academic offering is the undergraduate MBBS degree, the recognised qualification for medical practice in India. Admission to medical seats in the institute is governed by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) administered by the National Testing Agency, with counselling and seat allotment carried out under the rules of the Government of Nagaland and the regulatory framework of the National Medical Commission.

Significance

As the first dedicated medical college in Nagaland, NIMSR represents a significant step in the development of higher medical education in the state. Beyond teaching, the institute is expected to contribute to:

  • Expansion of specialist clinical services in Kohima.
  • Training of doctors familiar with the public health profile and geography of Nagaland.
  • Reduction in the need for patients to travel to neighbouring states such as Assam and Meghalaya for tertiary care.
  • Local research on health issues prevalent in the North East, including communicable diseases and maternal and child health.
