Nabinagar lies in the southern plains of Bihar, in a region drained by tributaries of the Son river system. The terrain is largely agricultural, with paddy and wheat being the main crops. The town is connected by road to Aurangabad, the district headquarters, and to other towns of the region such as Daudnagar and Dehri.
Nabinagar functions as a notified area for civic administration and is also the seat of a block (community development block) within Aurangabad district. As a revenue and police unit, it includes a number of surrounding villages within its jurisdiction. For parliamentary purposes, the area falls within the Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency, while the Nabinagar Vidhan Sabha constituency represents it in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
The local economy of Nabinagar is predominantly agrarian. In addition to farming, the town has emerged as an important centre of electricity generation in Bihar due to two large thermal power station projects established in its vicinity:
These projects have brought significant infrastructure investment, employment, and ancillary development to the town and surrounding villages.
Nabinagar is connected to nearby towns by state highways and district roads. The Grand Trunk Road (National Highway 19/old NH-2) passes through the wider Aurangabad district, providing onward connectivity to Patna, Gaya, and Varanasi. The nearest major railway connectivity is available through stations in the Dehri-on-Sone and Gaya region.
The population of Nabinagar is composed of multiple communities, with Hindi and the regional Magahi dialect being widely spoken. Hindu festivals such as Chhath, Holi, Durga Puja, and Diwali are observed alongside Eid and Muharram. The cultural life of the town reflects the broader traditions of the Magadh region of Bihar.
