Themes and significance

The show brought the issue of female foeticide and the skewed sex ratio in parts of northern India into mainstream Hindi general entertainment programming. It depicted how customs, caste councils, and family hierarchies have historically been used to suppress women's rights, while also showing characters who resist these structures. The character of Ammaji, portrayed by Meghna Malik, became one of the most recognised antagonists on Indian television during its run.

Reception and awards

The serial was widely noted for its writing and performances, particularly Meghna Malik's portrayal of Ammaji, which earned her several Indian television award nominations and wins in negative-role categories. The show was also recognised at industry award ceremonies for its socially relevant content.
