NIIT was established in 1981 by Rajendra S. Pawar and Vijay K. Thadani at a time when computer literacy in India was limited and formal IT education within universities was at an early stage. The company built a network of franchised and company-owned training centres that offered diploma and certificate programmes in programming, software applications, and information technology fundamentals. Its GNIIT programme, combining classroom instruction with industry practice, became a well-known route into the Indian software services industry during the 1990s.
Alongside individual learner training, NIIT developed a corporate training and content business that designed customised learning programmes for enterprises and educational institutions worldwide. The company also expanded into school learning solutions, multimedia content, and government skill-development partnerships.
NIIT played a notable role in popularising computer education in India during the 1980s and 1990s, helping create a wide pool of entry-level IT professionals at a time when public-sector technical education could not meet industry demand. Its franchise-based delivery model brought IT skills training to Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, and its corporate training business contributed to the development of India's learning services export industry. Co-founder Rajendra S. Pawar has been recognised in Indian industry forums for contributions to the IT and education sectors, and was conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
