Mullana is situated in the north-eastern part of Haryana, in a flat agricultural belt that forms part of the Indo-Gangetic plain. It lies between the major towns of Ambala to the west and Yamunanagar to the east, with the Shivalik foothills not far to the north. The surrounding countryside is largely agrarian, with wheat, sugarcane, paddy and seasonal vegetables cultivated in the area.
For administrative purposes, Mullana falls under the Ambala district administration in Haryana. It is connected to the Mullana–Saha–Barara belt, an area that has grown around educational and small industrial activity. Local governance is carried out through the panchayati raj framework and the relevant municipal body, with district-level oversight from Ambala.
Mullana is most widely identified with Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), a deemed-to-be university that operates a multi-faculty campus offering programmes in medicine, dentistry, engineering, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, management, law and basic sciences. The presence of the university, along with its associated hospital and professional colleges, has made Mullana an education-driven town that draws students from Haryana, neighbouring states and abroad.
The local economy combines agriculture in the surrounding villages with services associated with the university campus, including hospitality, retail, transport and healthcare. The teaching hospital attached to MMU also serves as a regional referral facility for patients from surrounding rural areas.
Although small compared with the district headquarters at Ambala, Mullana has acquired regional significance as a centre of higher and professional education in Haryana. It is frequently grouped with other education-focused settlements that have developed in and around the Ambala–Yamunanagar corridor.
