Sathe belonged to a period in Indian cricket that was largely shaped by the domestic structure built around the Ranji Trophy, the Duleep Trophy (introduced in 1961–62) and various zonal and university tournaments. Cricketers of his era typically combined regular employment with competitive cricket, with sides often drawn from cities, universities and corporate teams associated with public sector undertakings, banks and railways.
Sathe is recorded among Indian cricketers who featured in domestic first-class competition. His playing years coincided with the era when Indian cricket was transitioning from princely patronage to a more institutional and association-based system overseen by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Like many cricketers of his generation, Sathe contributed to the development of the domestic game in India during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, a period that produced several Test players and helped institutionalise competitive cricket at the state level.
