MPSTME was established as the engineering and technology school of NMIMS, which itself was founded in 1981 as a management institute and later granted deemed university status by the Government of India. The school was named after the industrialist Mukesh Patel and was set up to broaden NMIMS's academic portfolio beyond management education into engineering disciplines, while integrating elements of technology management drawn from the parent institution's business school heritage.
The Mumbai campus is situated within the SVKM complex in Vile Parle (West), which also houses several other institutions of the trust, including the Mithibai College and the NMIMS School of Business Management. The Shirpur campus, located in the Dhule district of northern Maharashtra, was developed as part of NMIMS's expansion outside Mumbai and accommodates engineering and pharmacy programmes.
MPSTME offers programmes across multiple branches of engineering and computing. Typical disciplines include:
Programmes are offered at the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) level, including integrated five-year MBA-Tech programmes that combine engineering with management coursework, as well as Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes. The MBA-Tech programme is one of the school's distinctive offerings, reflecting NMIMS's combined strengths in management and engineering education.
Undergraduate admissions to MPSTME are conducted primarily through the NMIMS Programmes After Twelfth (NPAT) examination administered by the parent university. Postgraduate engineering admissions consider scores from national-level tests in addition to the university's own entrance processes.
As a constituent school of NMIMS, MPSTME's degrees are awarded by NMIMS under its deemed-to-be-university status conferred under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission of India.
MPSTME represents the technology-oriented arm of one of India's prominent private deemed universities. Its integrated MBA-Tech model, combining a five-year programme of engineering and management studies, has been cited as an example of cross-disciplinary professional education in India. The school contributes to NMIMS's broader profile as a multidisciplinary institution spanning management, engineering, pharmacy, law, commerce and the sciences.
