Background

Mukesh Kumar hails from Gopalganj district in Bihar. He moved to Kolkata in his late teens in pursuit of a cricketing career and trained at local clubs in the city before being noticed in trials conducted by the Cricket Association of Bengal. His early years featured significant financial and logistical hurdles, and he has frequently spoken about the role played by domestic-circuit support and senior Bengal cricketers in his development.

Domestic career

Mukesh made his first-class debut for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and quickly established himself as the side's leading seamer. He played a key role in Bengal's run to the final of the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy, where the team finished as runners-up to Saurashtra. Across subsequent seasons, he was among the most prolific wicket-takers in the Ranji Trophy and also featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Bengal.

Indian Premier League

Mukesh was signed by Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and made his IPL debut for the franchise. He was later picked up by other franchises in subsequent auctions, continuing to play in the league as a pace-bowling option.

International career

Mukesh was first called up to the senior India squad as a net bowler and standby pacer during overseas tours, before earning his maiden international caps. He went on to make his Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International debuts for India, becoming part of the country's pace-bowling pool used in red-ball and white-ball cricket alongside the senior fast bowlers.

Style and significance

Mukesh is regarded as a classical seam-up bowler in the mould of Indian domestic stalwarts, relying on accuracy, wobble-seam deliveries and subtle variations of length rather than express pace. His progression from the maidans of Kolkata to the India squad has been highlighted as an example of the depth of India's domestic system and the pathway offered by state associations such as the Cricket Association of Bengal.
