Political career

2009 general election

In the 2009 Indian general election, Meshram contested from Ramtek on a Congress ticket and won the seat, entering the 15th Lok Sabha. The Ramtek seat had been previously held by Subodh Mohite of the Shiv Sena, and her victory was part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) sweep in Maharashtra that year.

Tenure in the 15th Lok Sabha

During her term as a Member of Parliament between 2009 and 2014, Meshram served on parliamentary committees associated with the functioning of the Lok Sabha and participated in matters concerning her constituency in the Vidarbha region, including issues relating to agriculture, irrigation, and Scheduled Caste welfare.

2014 general election

In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the Congress did not retain the Ramtek seat amid a broader national swing in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. Meshram did not return to the Lok Sabha after the conclusion of her single term.

Significance

Meshram's tenure is notable as part of the representation of Scheduled Caste women from Vidarbha in the national legislature. Ramtek, being a reserved constituency in a predominantly rural and semi-urban part of eastern Maharashtra, has been politically significant for issues such as Dalit welfare, farm distress in Vidarbha, and the Pench irrigation project that affects parts of the constituency.
