Yunus was active in a period when Indian cricket was administered through a relatively small panel of officiating umpires drawn from regional cricket associations. Umpires of his generation typically came up through club and zonal cricket before being appointed to first-class fixtures by the BCCI and its affiliated state associations.
Yunus officiated in first-class cricket matches in India. The bulk of first-class cricket in the country during his career consisted of the Ranji Trophy, the inter-zonal Duleep Trophy (introduced in 1961–62), and matches involving touring international sides.
Umpires such as Yunus contributed to the institutional growth of Indian domestic cricket in the decades following independence, supporting the standardisation of officiating practices that later allowed Indian umpires to gain recognition at the international level.
