The series centres on Dimple Ahuja, an aspiring app developer who enrols in a summer programme on game development at the fictional Aravali Institute of Technology in Jaipur, Rajasthan. There she encounters Rishi Singh Shekhawat, a romantic at heart who is convinced that the two are destined to be together. The narrative expands beyond the central pair to include an ensemble of students with their own ambitions, insecurities and relationships, examining themes such as career pressure, social media culture, identity and family expectation.
The series was developed for Netflix by RSVP Movies, with Gazal Dhaliwal credited for the screenplay adaptation of Sandhya Menon's novel. Akarsh Khurana directed the first season, with subsequent seasons featuring direction by Khurana along with Nipun Avinash Dharmadhikari. The opening season was filmed across locations in Rajasthan, with Jaipur and the surrounding desert landscapes used to evoke the campus setting. Music for the show was composed by Aditya N, with title songs and background score contributing to its young-adult tonality.
Mismatched found a substantial following among Indian Generation Z and millennial audiences, particularly for its portrayal of young Indian college life on a global streaming platform. Critics highlighted the casting of YouTube creator Prajakta Koli in her debut acting role and the chemistry between the leads. The show is frequently discussed alongside other Netflix India young-adult titles for its blend of romance with conversations on mental health, gender bias in technology and queer representation.
The series is among the early Indian young-adult original productions on Netflix and contributed to the streamer's expansion into locally produced content aimed at younger demographics. It also marked a notable transition for Prajakta Koli from digital content creation on YouTube into mainstream scripted entertainment, reflecting a broader trend of Indian creators moving across formats.
