Overview

MBMT functions as the transport wing of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, the civic body responsible for the administration of the urban agglomeration formed by Mira Road, Bhayandar and adjoining localities. The undertaking operates a fleet of city buses on routes that link residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres, civic facilities and railway stations on the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Background

The Mira-Bhayandar region grew rapidly from the 1980s onwards as a suburban extension of Mumbai, leading to demand for organised local public transport. The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation was constituted in 2002, upgrading the earlier Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Council, and the municipal transport service was developed under its jurisdiction to provide last-mile connectivity within the corporation's area.

Operations

MBMT bus routes are designed around the two principal suburban railway stations of the area, Bhayandar and Mira Road, which serve as major interchange points for commuters travelling to Mumbai. Feeder services connect interior localities such as Kashimira, Kashigaon, Naya Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Penkar Pada, Uttan and Bhayandar (West) to these stations. Some routes also extend towards adjoining areas in the Mumbai and Thane regions.

Like several other municipal transport undertakings in Maharashtra, MBMT has progressively introduced modern low-floor and air-conditioned buses, and has explored the induction of cleaner-fuel and electric vehicles in line with state and central government initiatives on urban transport modernisation.

Significance

As the only dedicated municipal bus operator within Mira-Bhayandar, MBMT plays an important role in providing affordable mobility for the city's working population, students and daily commuters. Its integration with suburban rail services makes it a key component of the multi-modal transport network of the northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
