Mindtree was established in 1999 by a group of ten technology professionals, including Ashok Soota, who had earlier led Wipro's IT business, and Subroto Bagchi, along with Krishnakumar Natarajan, N. S. Parthasarathy, and Rostow Ravanan, among others. The company set out to combine IT services with engineering R&D capabilities, positioning itself between the large Indian IT majors and niche specialists.
Through the 2000s, Mindtree grew its delivery footprint across India and built a global client base in the United States, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific. The firm was known for an emphasis on company culture and employee engagement, an aspect frequently highlighted in business writing by co-founder Subroto Bagchi.
Mindtree's offerings spanned application development and maintenance, digital and cloud services, data and analytics, enterprise solutions (including SAP and Salesforce ecosystems), testing, infrastructure management, and product engineering. Key industry verticals included:
The company maintained delivery centres in multiple Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Mumbai, with offices and onsite teams across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and East Asia.
Notable leaders associated with Mindtree included:
Mindtree was one of the prominent mid-tier Indian IT services firms during the 2000s and 2010s, often cited alongside companies such as Mphasis, Hexaware, and Persistent Systems. Its 2007 IPO drew attention for being one of the most oversubscribed Indian tech offerings of that period. The 2019 acquisition by Larsen & Toubro is studied as a landmark transaction in Indian corporate history for being executed against the wishes of the founding promoter group, and the subsequent 2022 merger created one of India's larger IT services firms by revenue.
