Rege came up through Mumbai's school and college cricket system, which during his era served as one of the principal feeders to the national team. He was a contemporary and close friend of Sunil Gavaskar, with whom he played age-group and college cricket in Bombay.
Rege represented Bombay in the Ranji Trophy, contributing as an all-rounder during a phase when the team won the championship repeatedly. After his playing days, he remained closely involved in Mumbai cricket administration and selection, serving on selection panels of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) over several years, including periods as chairman of selectors. He was also known as a cricket commentator and columnist, writing on Mumbai's cricketing traditions.
Although Rege did not play Test cricket, he is remembered as a long-standing figure in the Mumbai cricket establishment, both as a player in the city's celebrated Ranji Trophy sides and later as an administrator and mentor associated with the development of younger cricketers in the city.
