Over the decades, the country has grown into a strategic hub for the company, hosting one of its largest engineering and research footprints outside its global headquarters. Microsoft India's activities span enterprise sales, consumer products, developer outreach, partner ecosystems, and large-scale engineering and research.
The Microsoft India Development Center (MSIDC), located in Hyderabad, is among the largest Microsoft product development centres outside Redmond. It contributes to a wide range of Microsoft products and platforms, including Windows, Office, Bing, and Azure cloud services.
Microsoft Research India, established in Bengaluru in 2005, is the company's research lab in the country. It conducts research across areas such as algorithms, cryptography, machine learning, programming languages, systems, and technology for emerging markets.
Microsoft India plays a significant role in the Indian information technology sector, both as an employer of software professionals and as a provider of platforms used widely across government, enterprise, education, and consumer segments. Its cloud services, productivity software, and developer tools are integral to digital transformation initiatives in Indian businesses and public institutions. The presence of senior India-origin leadership at Microsoft globally, including chief executive officer Satya Nadella, has further linked the country closely to the company's global identity.
