Sivakasi and the surrounding region of southern Tamil Nadu have long been associated with industries such as printing, safety matches and fireworks, alongside agriculture in the wider Virudhunagar belt. The establishment of an engineering college in this region was part of a broader effort, beginning in the late twentieth century, to expand technical education in Tamil Nadu beyond the major metropolitan centres. Mepco Schlenk Engineering College was set up to serve students from southern Tamil Nadu and to supply trained engineers to local and national industry.
The name of the college reflects its institutional partnership: the Mepco group and the German company Schlenk were associated with the founding trust that supports the college. The institution functions on a not-for-profit basis under a charitable trust framework, a model common to several leading self-financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu.
As an Anna University-affiliated college, MSEC follows the curriculum, examination pattern and academic calendar prescribed by the affiliating university. Programmes are organised across departments covering core and emerging disciplines.
The college supports doctoral research under Anna University in selected departments, with faculty members guiding scholars in areas such as signal processing, power systems, structural engineering, manufacturing, computing and data sciences. Sponsored research, consultancy and student project work are encouraged through departmental laboratories and centres.
The campus is situated on the outskirts of Sivakasi, in a largely semi-urban setting. It includes academic blocks for individual departments, central facilities such as a library, computing centre and auditorium, and a range of teaching and research laboratories.
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes follows the single-window counselling process administered by the Government of Tamil Nadu, popularly known as TNEA, which is based on Class XII marks in the relevant subjects for candidates from Tamil Nadu. A share of seats is filled under the management quota as per applicable regulations. Postgraduate admissions for M.E./M.Tech. are based on TANCET scores and Anna University counselling
