Malik rose to wide recognition with her portrayal of Ammaji, the high-handed village matriarch, in Colors TV's Na Aana Is Des Laado. The serial used the character to dramatise social issues affecting women in rural India, including female infanticide, and the role established her as a recognisable face of Indian prime-time television.
In 2013, she participated as a contestant on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. In 2016, she appeared in Star Plus's drama Dahleez.
In 2017, Malik reprised her signature role of Ammaji in the sequel series Laado 2 – Veerpur Ki Mardani. She quit the show in early 2018.
Through the character of Ammaji, Malik became closely associated with Indian television's engagement with gender-based social issues. The popularity of the role across two series — Na Aana Is Des Laado and its sequel Laado 2 — made her one of the more identifiable character actresses on Hindi general entertainment channels.
