The university was set up under a state legislative act of the Government of Sikkim, which enables private universities to be established within the state. It operates within the broader Indian policy push towards vocational and skill-based education articulated in initiatives such as the Skill India Mission and the National Education Policy 2020, both of which emphasise the integration of academic learning with employable skills.
MSU's pedagogy is built on a work-integrated learning model, in which classroom instruction is combined with on-the-job training, apprenticeships, and industry projects. Programmes are typically designed in partnership with sector skill councils and industry partners so that curricula correspond to occupational standards recognised under the NSQF.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate programmes across fields such as hospitality, healthcare, paramedical sciences, management, information technology, media, design, and applied sciences. Many programmes embed apprenticeship components under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme or the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme, allowing students to earn while they learn.
Schools and centres within the university are organised around industry sectors rather than purely traditional disciplines, reflecting the institution's vocational orientation.
The university is based in Sikkim, a state in the Eastern Himalayan region of India. Sikkim shares borders with Nepal, Bhutan, the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, and the Indian state of West Bengal. Gangtok serves as the state's capital and principal urban centre.
Medhavi Skills University is part of a small group of Indian universities expressly oriented towards skills-based degrees. Its model is intended to address the gap between conventional academic qualifications and the practical competencies sought by employers, particularly in service-sector and technical occupations. By locating itself in Sikkim, the institution also contributes to higher-education capacity in India's North East, a region historically served by fewer universities than the national average.
