The Mauganj area lies in the Vindhyan plateau region of north-eastern Madhya Pradesh. Historically, it was administered as a tehsil within Rewa district, which itself was part of the princely state of Rewa before its merger into the Indian Union. The decision to create a separate district was driven by considerations of administrative convenience, given the size and population of the parent Rewa district and the relative distance of outlying tehsils from the Rewa city headquarters.
Mauganj was announced as a new district by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and operationalised as the state's newest district in the Rewa division. With its creation, several tehsils that were earlier under Rewa district were reorganised under the new Mauganj administration, with Mauganj town designated as the district headquarters.
The district is situated in the eastern part of Madhya Pradesh, sharing administrative boundaries with Rewa district and other neighbouring districts of the Rewa and Shahdol divisions. The terrain is characteristic of the Vindhyan range, comprising plateau land, agricultural plains and forested patches. The region forms part of the catchment of tributaries of the Tons River system.
As with other districts of Madhya Pradesh, Mauganj is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police heading the district police. The district is subdivided into tehsils and development blocks for revenue and rural development administration. It falls within the jurisdiction of the Rewa divisional commissioner.
Agriculture is the principal occupation in the district, with crops typical of the Vindhyan-Baghelkhand belt such as paddy, wheat, pulses and oilseeds. The local economy also depends on allied activities including animal husbandry and small-scale trade centred on the towns of Mauganj and Hanumana. The local language and culture reflect the broader Bagheli-speaking Baghelkhand region.
