Labuschagne represented Queensland at various levels in junior cricket before progressing through the state's senior pathway. He made his first-class debut in 2014, beginning a domestic career that would eventually lead to him captaining the side.
Labuschagne has been a central figure in the Australian Test side in recent years. In August 2019, during the Ashes series in England, he became the first cricketer in the history of Test cricket to be used as a concussion substitute, replacing Steve Smith. The substitution rule had been introduced earlier that year by the International Cricket Council.
He finished 2019 as the leading run-scorer in Test matches and rose to fourth place in the ICC Player Rankings, an improvement of 106 places over the course of the year. He subsequently climbed to the top of the Test batting rankings.
Labuschagne was a member of the Australian squad that won the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, the team's sixth ODI World Cup title.
Labuschagne's rapid emergence after being drafted in as a concussion substitute in 2019 is widely regarded as one of the more remarkable rises in modern Test cricket, with the player going from a fringe selection to the world's top-ranked Test batter within a short period. His role across formats and franchises, including a captaincy stint in the Pakistan Super League, reflects his evolution into a senior figure in international and franchise cricket.
