Manpreet Singh was born and raised in Mithapur, a village near Jalandhar in Punjab, a region with a long tradition of producing Indian hockey players. He took up the sport in his childhood and trained at Surjit Hockey Academy in Jalandhar, an institution named after the late India international Surjit Singh. He came up through age-group sides, representing India at the junior level before progressing to the senior team.
Manpreet captained the India junior side and represented the country at junior international tournaments, including the FIH Junior World Cup. His performances at the junior level marked him out as a future senior international.
He made his senior debut for India at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia, in 2011. Over the following years he established himself as a fixture in central midfield, recognised for his work rate, ball-carrying and ability to link defence with attack.
He has played at the 2012 London Olympics, the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In 2017 he was appointed captain of the senior men's team, replacing P. R. Sreejesh in the role. Under his captaincy, India won several major tournaments, including the Asia Cup in 2017 in Dhaka.
At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, Manpreet led India to a 5–4 victory over Germany in the bronze medal match. The medal ended a 41-year wait for an Olympic podium finish in men's hockey, the previous one being the gold at the 1980 Moscow Games.
Manpreet has played in the Hockey India League (HIL), turning out for franchises during the league's active years between 2013 and 2017. In domestic competition he has represented Punjab and the services-affiliated departmental sides associated with public sector employers.
Manpreet plays primarily as a centre-half. He is regarded for his fitness, tactical awareness, accurate distribution and ability to recycle possession through midfield. As captain, he has been associated with a more aggressive, possession-based approach developed under coaches Harendra Singh, Graham Reid and later Craig Fulton.
Manpreet Singh is considered one of the central figures in the revival of Indian men's hockey in the late 2010s and early 2020s. His captaincy coincided with India's return to consistent podium contention in major international competitions, and the Tokyo bronze in particular is regarded as a landmark moment for the sport in the country.
