Gony hails from Punjab and progressed through age-group and state cricket before establishing himself in the Punjab senior side in domestic competitions such as the Ranji Trophy, the Duleep Trophy and limited-overs tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Gony played first-class and List A cricket for Punjab. His ability to extract bounce and seam movement, combined with useful lower-order hitting, made him a regular member of the Punjab attack during the late 2000s.
He was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. Performing impressively as a death-overs bowler in that season, he became one of the breakout names of the tournament's first edition. He later turned out for Kings XI Punjab in subsequent seasons of the league.
On the back of his IPL form, Gony was selected for the Indian One Day International squad and made his debut for India in 2008. His international career, however, remained limited.
Gony is often cited as an early example of how the Indian Premier League opened a pathway from domestic cricket to national selection, with strong franchise performances directly translating into an India call-up. His association with the first Chennai Super Kings squad places him among the original players of a franchise that would go on to become one of the most successful in IPL history.
