Manipur University (Meitei: Manipur Taibang Maheikol) is a public central university located at Imphal, the capital of the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur. Its main campus is situated at Canchipur, on the southern fringe of the city, on the site of the Langthabal Konung, a former royal palace.
The university was established by the Government of Manipur on 5 June 1980 under the Manipur University Act, 1980. For the first quarter-century of its existence, it functioned as a state-run, teaching-cum-affiliating institution with jurisdiction across Manipur. It was elevated to central university status through the Manipur University Act, 2005, passed by the Parliament of India and assented to by the President of India on 28 December 2005, with the new arrangement taking effect from 13 October 2005.
Manipur University operates nine schools of studies and forty-seven academic departments. It serves as the affiliating authority for 119 colleges across the state, including three medical colleges. The Manipur Institute of Technology is its sole constituent college. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission and was re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a 'B+' grade in its second cycle, completed in 2023.
