The university was established to provide higher education and research opportunities in Manipur and the wider north-eastern region of India. Initially set up as a state university, it was later converted into a central university by an Act of the Parliament of India, bringing it under the administrative and financial purview of the Government of India through the Ministry of Education. The transition to central status enhanced its funding base and broadened its academic mandate.
The university is organised into several schools and departments covering disciplines such as physical sciences, mathematics, chemical sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, social sciences, humanities, languages, education, management, and technology. It also affiliates a number of colleges across Manipur, making it the principal affiliating university of the state for general higher education.
Research activities at the university span fields including biodiversity studies relevant to the eastern Himalayan and Indo-Burma region, regional history and culture, Manipuri language and literature, and applied sciences. The university awards M.Phil and Ph.D degrees in addition to its taught programmes.
The main campus is situated at Canchipur, a suburb to the south of Imphal city, on a sizeable tract of land that hosts academic blocks, administrative offices, residential quarters, hostels, a central library, and sports facilities. The campus lies in the Imphal valley, surrounded by the hill districts of Manipur.
As the only central university based in Manipur, the institution plays a central role in shaping higher education policy, teacher training, and academic research in the state. It is an important driver of skilled manpower for the regional economy and government services, and its faculties contribute to the documentation and study of the languages, cultures, and ecology of north-east India.
