The institution was conceived to serve students primarily from the Hindi-speaking regions of central India, with curricula offered in Hindi alongside English. Over time it has expanded into newer media areas such as electronic media, new media, advertising and public relations, while continuing to anchor work in print journalism.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and doctoral programmes. Core areas of teaching and research include:
In addition to programmes on its main campus, the university operates a network of affiliated and study centres that deliver its courses across Madhya Pradesh and beyond, including through distance and regular modes.
The main campus is located in Bhopal. The university also maintains additional campus facilities within the state to support teaching, training and outreach in journalism and communication.
As one of India's first universities dedicated to journalism and communication, MCNUJC has played a notable role in producing media professionals and educators for the Hindi-language press, broadcasting and digital media sectors. Its emphasis on Hindi-medium media education distinguishes it from many comparable institutions where instruction is predominantly in English, and it has contributed to the institutionalisation of media studies in central India.
