Mainpuri district is situated in the western part of Uttar Pradesh, on the alluvial plain between the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. The Isan, Sengar, Arind and Kali rivers flow through parts of the district, supporting irrigation and agriculture. The terrain is generally flat, with fertile loamy soils characteristic of the central doab.
The district is bordered by Etah, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, Auraiya, Firozabad and Kasganj districts in different directions.
The district is divided into tehsils including Mainpuri, Bhogaon, Karhal, Kishni and Ghiror, along with several community development blocks. For parliamentary representation, the district forms the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency, which has historically been associated with the Samajwadi Party and was represented for many years by Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Mainpuri has a long historical lineage, with associations to the Chauhan Rajputs, who held influence in the region during the medieval period. Under the British, Mainpuri was constituted as a district of the North-Western Provinces and later the United Provinces. The town and district figured in events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when local rulers and zamindars participated in the uprising against the East India Company.
The economy of the district is predominantly agricultural. Major crops include wheat, paddy, bajra, mustard, potato and sugarcane. Mainpuri is also traditionally known for tarkashi, a craft involving inlay work of brass wire on dark wood, practised by artisans in the region.
Hindi is the principal language of administration and daily use, with Braj and Kannauji dialects spoken in parts of the district. The district shares the cultural traditions of the western Uttar Pradesh doab, including local fairs, temple festivals and folk music forms.
Mainpuri is connected by road to Agra, Etawah, Kanpur and Lucknow through the state highway network. The Mainpuri railway station lies on a branch line of the North Central Railway. National highways passing through or near the district provide further regional connectivity.
