Mahua Moitra (born 12 October 1974) is an Indian politician and former investment banker. Before entering politics, she worked as an investment banker at JPMorgan Chase. She is associated with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and has served as the party's general secretary and national spokesperson.
Moitra represented the Karimpur constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2019. She contested and won the 2019 Indian general election from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket, serving as a Member of Parliament from 2019 to 2023. On 13 November 2023, she was appointed AITC District President of Krishnanagar (Nadia North).
On 8 December 2023, Moitra was disqualified and expelled from the Lok Sabha following the recommendation of the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee in a cash-for-query matter relating to the sharing of her login credentials for the NIC portal. She was subsequently re-elected to Parliament in the 2024 Indian general election from Krishnanagar.
Moitra has spoken on issues concerning minority rights in India. In 2019, she opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and, along with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), moved the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the law. She has also petitioned the Calcutta High Court on the question of animal sacrifice rights for Muslims. She is known in Parliament for her speeches and has been a vocal critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Hindutva ideology.
