Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith is a public university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was established on 10 February 1921 as Kashi Vidyapith and was later renamed in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. The university is administered under the state legislature of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The institution received university status in 1974 as a deemed-to-be-university. It was subsequently accorded state university status in 2009 through The Uttar Pradesh State Universities (Amendment) Act, 2008 (Act No. 6 of 2009), bringing it into the framework of state-funded universities in Uttar Pradesh.
The university has a wide affiliation network, with more than 400 affiliated colleges spread across six districts. It is regarded as one of the larger state universities in Uttar Pradesh, catering to a substantial student population drawn from both rural and urban areas.
Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith offers a range of professional and academic programmes across multiple disciplines, including arts, science, commerce, agricultural science, law, computing and management. The combination of its main campus operations and its affiliated colleges enables the university to provide higher education across a broad geographical region of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
