Background

The university was set up to expand higher education capacity in Tripura and to provide a state-level affiliating and teaching institution alongside Tripura University, which functions as a central university. It draws its name from Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur (reigned 1923–1947), under whose rule Agartala saw significant educational and infrastructural development, including the founding of Maharaja Bir Bikram College, which forms a part of the university's institutional lineage.

Academics

The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across disciplines in the arts, sciences, commerce and professional studies. As a state university, it functions both as a teaching body and as an affiliating institution for colleges in Tripura, conducting examinations and awarding degrees in accordance with state higher education regulations.

Significance

MBB University plays a role in widening access to higher education in north-eastern India, particularly in Tripura, by complementing the existing central university system. By being named after Maharaja Bir Bikram, the institution also reflects a continuity with the princely-era patronage of education in the region.
