Madipakkam is situated in southern Chennai, bordered by several well-known neighbourhoods. It lies close to Velachery to the north-east, Nanganallur to the west, Ullagaram and Puzhuthivakkam to the north, and Keelkattalai to the south. The suburb is connected to the rest of Chennai by Madipakkam Main Road and Velachery Main Road, with the Outer Ring Road and the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road accessible nearby.
The locality is characterised by a mix of older independent houses and newer apartment complexes. The Madipakkam Lake, a freshwater body within the suburb, is one of its notable geographical features and has historically supported local agriculture and groundwater recharge.
Madipakkam comes under the jurisdiction of the local civic body responsible for the southern suburbs of Chennai. For administrative purposes it falls within the Chengalpattu district, which was carved out of the erstwhile Kancheepuram district. The locality is part of the Sholinganallur assembly constituency for state elections and the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary elections.
Madipakkam is served by buses operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), which connect the suburb to major hubs such as T. Nagar, Tambaram, Adyar, and Broadway. The nearest suburban railway stations are at Velachery, on the Chennai MRTS line, and at Pallavaram and Trisulam on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu line. The Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam is located a short distance from the suburb.
Madipakkam is a predominantly residential suburb with a mixed middle-class and upper-middle-class population. Tamil is the most widely spoken language, although Telugu, English, and other Indian languages are also commonly heard owing to migration from other parts of the country, particularly with the growth of the IT corridor along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Velachery.
The suburb hosts several schools, both matriculation and CBSE-affiliated, along with playschools, coaching centres, and small colleges. Healthcare is supported by neighbourhood clinics and proximity to larger hospitals in Velachery and Adyar. Local markets, supermarkets, places of worship, and parks serve daily community needs.
Madipakkam exemplifies the residential transformation of southern Chennai from agrarian villages into urban neighbourhoods. Its proximity to major employment centres such as the Velachery shopping and IT belt, the Tidel Park area, and the OMR IT corridor has made it a sought-after residential locality for professionals working in those sectors.
