It is widely associated with what was promoted as the world's longest river cruise voyage, undertaken across the Ganga–Brahmaputra river system and adjoining waterways between India and Bangladesh. India has long sought to revive cargo and passenger movement on its major rivers. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has been developing National Waterway 1 on the Ganga and National Waterway 2 on the Brahmaputra, along with terminals, navigation aids, and dredging operations. The MV Ganga Vilas was conceived as a flagship effort to showcase these waterways for high-end tourism, linking heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural destinations along the river corridor.
The inaugural voyage covered a route running from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, down the Ganga through Bihar, West Bengal, into the rivers of Bangladesh via the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, and then up the Brahmaputra to Dibrugarh in Assam. The itinerary included stops at heritage and tourism destinations associated with the river system, among them Patna, Sahibganj, Kolkata, Dhaka and the riverine landscapes of Assam, including the area around Kaziranga National Park.
The MV Ganga Vilas is configured as a luxury cruise ship with passenger suites, dining and lounge facilities, intended primarily for international tourists in addition to Indian travellers. The vessel is operated by a private cruise operator in coordination with the Inland Waterways Authority of India, which provides terminal infrastructure and navigational support along the route.
The launch of the MV Ganga Vilas was positioned by the Government of India as a milestone in inland river tourism, demonstrating the navigability of the Ganga–Brahmaputra system over an extended distance and connecting Indian and Bangladeshi waterways through the protocol route. The cruise is presented as part of efforts to promote cultural tourism, generate employment in riverine regions, and complement infrastructure projects such as the Jal Marg Vikas Project on National Waterway 1.
