Lupin was founded in 1968 by Desh Bandhu Gupta, a former professor of chemistry at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani. The company was named after the lupin flower, chosen by the founder for the qualities it symbolises. In its early years, the firm focused on manufacturing essential medicines, particularly anti-tuberculosis drugs, an area in which it later became one of the leading global producers.
Over the decades, Lupin diversified beyond APIs into branded and generic finished dosage formulations, expanded into chronic therapy areas, and built a significant international presence through acquisitions and organic growth in markets including the United States, Japan, South Africa, Europe, the Philippines, Australia and Brazil.
Lupin operates manufacturing facilities in India and abroad, producing formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients that are exported to numerous countries. Its product portfolio spans multiple therapeutic categories, with notable strength in anti-tuberculosis therapy, cardiovascular medicines, diabetes care, respiratory products and women's health. The company has invested in research and development centres focused on generics, novel drug delivery systems, biosimilars and complex injectables.
Lupin is considered one of the flagship companies of India's pharmaceutical industry, contributing substantially to the country's reputation as a major supplier of affordable generic medicines. Its leadership in anti-tuberculosis therapy has had a public health impact in regions with a high disease burden. The company is also among the larger Indian-origin pharmaceutical players in the United States generics market and in Japan, where it operates through its subsidiary Kyowa Pharmaceutical Industry.
